_. The 8th (and 9th) Earl of Mansfield & Mansfield, a government minister in the Thatcher Administration, of Scone Palace, Perthshire, died 21 October, 2015, at Logie House, Logiealmond, Perthshire. He was 85.
William David Mungo James Murray, JP, DL, was born 7 July, 1930, the only son of the 7th Earl of Mansfield & Mansfield, by his wife Dorothea Helena (d 1985), daughter of the Rt Hon Sir Lancelot Carnegie, GCVO, KCMG (scion of the Earls of Southesk); succeeded to the family honours on his father's death in 1971.
He was the 8th & 9th Earls (cr 1776 & 1792); Baron Scone (cr 1605); Viscount Stormont (cr 1621); Baron Balvaird (cr 1641) (Earl of Dunbar, Viscount Drumcairn & Baron Halldykes in the Jacobite peerage); Hereditary Keeper of Bruce's Castle of Lochmaben; was First Crown Estates Commissioner, 1985-95; Opposition Spokesman in the House of Lords 1975-79; minister of State, Scottish Office, 1979-83; Minister of State, Northern Ireland Office, 1983-4; numerous public appointments, &c.
Married 1955, Pamela Joan, daughter of W.N. Foster, CBE, by whom he had 2 sons and one daughter. He is succeeded in the peerages by his elder son, Alexander David Mungo Murray, styled Viscount Stormont, who was born 17 October, 1956. Lord Stormont is married and has issue including William Philip David Mungo Murray, styled Master of Stormont, b 1 Nov, 1988.
Funeral and Memorial Service to be held at St John's Kirk of Perth, 30 Oct, 2015, and afterwards at Scone Palace.
