The 4th Earl of Iddesleigh, DL, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon since
1999; Director, Devon & Exeter Steeplechases Ltd since 1975
(Vice-Chairman, 1990-98), died 8 July, 2004. He was aged 71.
Stafford Henry Northcote, 4th Earl of Iddesleigh (created 1885),
Viscount St Cyres (created 1885) and a Baronet (created 1641), was
born 14 July, 1932, elder son of the 3rd Earl (1901-70), by his wife
Elizabeth Susan Angela Mary, elder daughter of Frederic Sawrey
Archibald Lowndes, and Mrs Belloc-Lowndes.
The first earl, Sir Stafford Northcote, MP for Exeter, was
successively Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for
Foreign Affairs.
He was educated at Downside.
Career: 2nd Lieutenant, Irish Guards, 1951-52; Director of Television
South West, 1982-92; Director, Gemini Radio Ltd, 1993-98; Director,
Orchard Media Ltd, 1996-98; Director, UDT, 1983-87; Director, TSB
Group, 1986-87; Director, TSB Commercial Holdings, 1987; Member, South
West Region of the TSB Group Board (Chairman, 1983-87); appointed a
deputy Lieutenant of Devon, 1979; KtSMO, Malta, &c.
He married in 1955, Maria Luisa Alvarez-Builla y Urquijo [Condesa del
Real Agrado in Spain] OBE, DL, daughter of Don Gonzalo Alvarez-Builla
y Alvera and of Viscountess Exmouth, widow of the 9th Viscount
Exmouth, by whom he had one son , John, and one daughter, Lady Mary
Louise Fishwick.
The peerages and baronetcy now devolve upon his only son, John
Stafford Northcote, styled Viscount St Cyres, born 15 February, 1957.
The funeral Requiem Mass takes place at the Sacred Heart Church, South
Street,Exeter, 19 July, 2004.
