James Brokenshire, who died 7 October 2021, aged 53, was a Conservative politician.

He served in Theresa May's cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2016 to 2018, and then as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government from 2018 to 2019. In 2020 he was appointed by Boris Johnson as Minister of State for Security at the Home Office. He stepped down from this post in January 2021 due to his lung cancer, from which he died on 7 October 2021. Brokenshire was Member of Parliament (MP) for Hornchurch from 2005 to 2010, and for Old Bexley and Sidcup from 2010 until his death.

James Brokenshire, who has died aged 53, was a safe pair of hands in the governments of David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson; but his career was truncated by twice having to resign to undergo treatment for lung cancer, and also by being left out of Johnson’s first ministerial team....

Despite being fit, healthy and a non-smoker, Brokenshire found in 2017 that he had cancer, but after his treatment he returned to politics
