She was born Vera Margaret Welch, 20 March, 1917, daughter of Bertram Samuel Welch and Annie Welch; married 1941, Harry Lewis [who whom she had one daughter]; educated at Brampton Rd School, East Ham; first public appearance as a singer in 1924; joined a juvenile troupe, 1928; ran own dancing school, 1932; broadcasts with Joe Loss and joined Charlie Kunz, 1935; singer with the Ambrose Orchestra 1937-40; then took solo career; voted the most popular singer in a Daily Express competition, 1939; named the Forces Sweetheart; had her own radio show 'Sincerely Yours 1941-47; starred in Applesauce at the London Palladium, 1941; sang to the troops in Burma, 1944 [Received the Burma Star, 1985]; &c.
