Professor Mary McGeown, CBE, FRCP, FRCPE, FRCPI, Professorial Fellow,
Queen's University, Belfast since 1988, died at Belfast, 21 November,
2004. She was aged 81.

Mary Graham McGeown was born 19 July, 1923, daughter of James Edward
McGeown and Sarah Graham Quinn, and was educated at Lurgan College, and
at Queen's University, Belfast.

Career: Senior House Physician, Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick
Children, 1948; Asistant Lecturer in Pathlogy, 1948-50, in
Biochemistry, 1950-53, Queen's University, Belfast; Consultant
Nephrologist, 1962-88; Hon Reader in Nephrology, QUB, 1972-87; Chairman
United Kingdom Transplant Management Committee, 1983-90; Hon Treasurer,
Renal Association, 1986-89, President, Renal Assoc., 1983-86;
President, Ulster Medical Soc., 1985-86; &c.

She was appointed CBE in 1985.

Prof McGeown married in 1949, Joseph Maxwell Freeland (who died in
1982), by whom she had five sons, John, Peter Mark, Paul, and the late
David.
