Antony Lambton, who died on Saturday aged 84, was an energetic and
talented Conservative MP until he inherited the Earldom of Durham,
which he renounced in order to retain his seat in the House of Commons.

Although he gave up his Earldom for himself so he could enter the House of
Commons, his son Edward Richard still succeeds to the Earldom and the
Peerage remains in existence, and his son becomes the seventh Earl.
Regards Mike.

I've always been "old fashioned" in that I think that a House of Lords
populated mainly by hereditary peers is a good thing and we should return to
that, and it keeps the Commons in check.

Indeed. And a peer like say the Duke of Devonshire owes nothing to the
Prime Minister of the day does he? Not like Tony's numerous cronies.
