Wonderful man, he taught me to fly.
Sir Henry White took me for a flight test in 1990 at Wilson Airport (Nairobi) so I would be able to rent aircraft through the British Aero Club. He was absolutely professional and had a great sense of humor. While I was getting ready for take off on runway 07 he informed me that the normal procedure would be to climb out straight and level, but since the Nairobi authorities had allowed the building of an apartment not too far past the end of runway 07, it would be best to take a heading of 120 to continue climbing out soon after crossing runway 14. He then stated "the reason for this is if you experience engine failure on take off and remain straight out on 07 you will then collide with the apartment and screw up Mrs. Kariuki's salad." I laughed and I have never forgotten the joy of flying with him for those fantastic 30 minutes. It was a gift I shall always treasure.

Sir Henry taught me to fly in 1984. He was an interesting and modest man who I enjoyed talking to over a fresh lime juice and lemonade at the Aeroclub of East Africa. He was a brilliant instructor.

What a shame you never met him. He really was an charming man, and I was extremely lucky to have him teach me. He was unbelievably relaxed when I made mistakes. I no longer fly, but I feel very fortunate to have made his aquaintance. Also at the aeroclub was "Daddy" Probyn, at the time the worlds oldest active pilot! I have very fond memories of standing at the bar, drinking, and singing old pilots songs with legends! Daddy was a WW1 ace.

Henry also taught me to fly. The first session took place at Wilson Airport on 8th November 1974. After a short explanatory conversation in which he assessed my dubious mathematical ability he agreed to take me on. He was a superb individual; entertainingly eccentric; always a sense of humour. If I remember the Secretary of the Aero Club of East Africa was a certain John Humphries - I think it was JH who quietly told me that Henry did not fly from lunchtime on Fridays until after breakfast on Mondays - took me a while to work out why!

An unforgettable experience from a truly unforgettable gentleman.
